Best Friends Forever

I've talked before about how I don't really have a best friend (check it out here) and was reading Anna Faris's book last month and she said she finds it kind of weird, as an adult, to rank your friends. She went on to say a lot of what I said in my previous post. That being said, I'm not judging you if you have a bestie. I think it's wonderful and sometimes I wish I had one, too. Especially after watching Romy and Michele's High School Reunion for the millionth time last night.

The funny thing is, I first saw this movie in the theater with my BFF in 1997. We had been going through a rocky patch though. We spent time together at school, but stopped talking on the phone or seeing each other outside class and other school functions. Since she was going through a breakup, I thought it'd be nice to have some girl time. We both loved the movie (well, me more than her) and when it was over, we talked about what life was going to be like for us after graduation. We swore we were going to stay friends forever and be a part of each other's lives just like Michele and Romy.

After graduation night, we hardly talked, but finally hung out about a month into the summer. In that time, I'd started dating her ex-boyfriend. Oops! It was three months after their breakup, and she had a new boyfriend she was totally in love with, but yeah...I broke girl code. So we hung out (at her new boyfriend's house), had an strange talk about it all, and left on good terms. She insisted she was fine.

I was so hopeful, I invited her to a party so we could all hang out together. There were a few awkward moments, like when she wanted to talk to my boyfriend in private and came out of his room in tears. Or when he was a little jealous that one of his friends was hitting on her. And then at the end of the night when he told me he was in love with me for the first time. Eventful party!

She and I hung out a few more times that summer and then our friendship fizzled out. We didn't end on bad terms or have a huge fight. We just weren't the same people we met in fifth grade, the boyfriend situation made things uncomfortable, and it was feeling forced. I talked to her a few times when I went off to college. She got engaged and wanted to tell me about it (but didn't invite me to the wedding). We also talked again when she was going through a divorce. I think we said we'd hang out, but nothing ever came of it.

She lives in California now and we talk casually on Facebook, but that's the extent of our relationship. If I met her now, we wouldn't be friends because we are sooo different, but I do miss her sometimes. She was the other half of my brain through all the drama of middle and high school.

And now, let's get on to the fun stuff. Here are my ten favorite BFFs from TV and movies.

Michele and Romy, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion

Brenda and Kelly, Beverly Hills, 90210

I have always sucked at having a best friend. I have always had friends, and in high school I was part of the popular crowd but I have never managed to keep a BFF type of friendship going.
That said, I have 4 friends that I consider my best friends ... but 2 of them live on the other side of the world and two of them live here in Belgium. But I don't see them that often either. Life gets in the way. I also have totally different kind of relationships with them. In October I got a tattoo of their favourite flowers as away of marking how long we have been friends. Sometimes I wish I had a friend that I have had forever and ever since I was a kid ... but hey, my life didn't turn out that way. I don't tell any of them everything that happens in my life but between them I think we have most things covered.

TV BFFs that I love: Julia Roberts & Laura San Giacomo (Vivian & Kit) Pretty Woman

I love Ann and Leslie.
I have always been someone with a best friend plus two or three other very close friends. My high school bff was like my Siamese twin. We were always together, our parents were friends, and we knew everything about each other. Then she got a bf who was bad news and I got one who was significantly older than us (for the ages we were), and we drifted... We're both still with those boys, but I wish she'd have picked a different path in life...
Right now I have three close/best friends that I'm assuming I will have for the rest of my life. I consider all three of them my best friends, even though I have a different relationship with each of them.
