Twenty Years Ago

I can't let 2015 end without one more shout out to 1995. I don't know why I've felt so nostalgic lately, it just seems like so long ago, but also like yesterday. Getting old sucks, you guys. Don't do it. I already talked about all the songs I loved, so let's check out more from that year.

These are the albums I listened to from top to bottom in my Discman.

(What's the Story) Morning Glory?, Tragic Kingdom, Jagged Little Pill, Garbage, Foo Fighters
...And Out Come the Wolves, The Presidents, One Hot Minute, HIStory, Something to Remember
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Insomniac, Relish, Sparkle and Fade, Fresh Horses

Some of these movies were huge, and some were flops. Some of those flops are still my favorites.

Empire Records, Clueless, Mallrats, Now and Then, Billy Madison
Seven, The Usual Suspects, Toy Story, Apollo 13, Friday
Dangerous Minds, The Brady Bunch Movie, Jumanji, Casper, Braveheart

Which of these hit shows were you watching on television?

Friends, Seinfeld, ER, My So-Called Life, Beverly Hills, 90210
Road Rules, Mad About You, NewsRadio, Unhappily Ever After, Ned & Stacey
The Drew Carey Show, Martin, Singled Out, Aeon Flux, Goosebumps

I didn't read for pleasure in 11th grade, but I've read some of these books since then.

High Fidelity, The Golden Compass, Wicked, The Lost World, The Horse Whisperer
Left Behind, Lies My Teacher Told Me, The Rainmaker, A Child Called "It," Where The Heart Is
The Reader, The Bridges of Madison County, Beach Music, Five Days in Paris, In Confidence

These were the big news stories that year.

Oklahoma City bombing, OJ Simpson trial, Million Man March, Whitewater, 21-day government shutdown
Easy E, Dean Martin, Jerry Garcia passed away, Selena was murdered, Christopher Reeve was paralyzed
End of Bosnia-Herzegovina war, Israeli Prime Minister assassination, Operation Desert Storm ended,
Tokyo subway nerve gas attack, WTO was formed

And then there were the toys, technology, and pop culture

Sexiest Man Alive Brad Pitt, Starbucks Frappuccino, Match.com, X Games, Nintendo Virtual Boy
Sega Saturn, Drew Barrymore on Letterman, Windows 95, Pogs, Most Beautiful Woman Courteney Cox
George Foreman Grill, Amazon.com, Time's Man of the Year Newt Gingrich, PlayStation, The Box

Have you ever seen the Windows 95 instructional video with Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry?
I hadn't and it's hilariously terrible. And it's an hour long, so just take a quick peek.

What a year! What do you remember from 1995?

I totally forgot about Ned & Stacey.

I can't believe I read Beach Music the year it came out.

You know you're getting old when you get nostalgic for your youth - movies, music, etc. Now I totally understand these cliches of old people saying "kids these days..." But I also think technology has enabled our nostalgia. Netflix putting old episodes of our favorite tv shows, remakes, etc.

There's a Songza playlist "1994 was the greatest year of music" lol and I agree as well for tv. Thanks for this round-up :)

1995 was my Senior year of college. So, yeah, I was in the midst of livin' and lovin' life. So many of these things, I was nodding my head, saying "yep". I don't even remember Ned and Stacey, and I hated Mad About You.

I'm so glad to see Garth make an appearance. Garth was a guilty pleasure of mine for a long time too.

Being from Texas, Selena was the queen goddess of all at that time. Such a tragedy.

I listened to Oasis, No Doubt, Alanis, POTUSA, and Garbage.

I watched Clueless, Billy Madison (duh), Seven, Toy Story, Apollo 13, Friday, and Dangerous Minds. Can you believe I've never seen Braveheart? Oops. I watched Jumanji for the first time with the kids this year.

I watched Friends, My So-Called Life, 90210, Martin, and Singled Out. Aeon Flux! I forgot all about that. Do you remember Liquid Television on MTV? Loved that show.

I was obsessed with the OJ story.
