Irrational Fears

Let's get a little spooky on this Halloween eve. Ok, maybe not for you, but for me. Remember when I wrote about creepers sneaking into people's houses and how afraid of that scenario I was? (Check it out here.) I have tons of other irrational fears. Sometimes I feel crazy and sometimes I think it's completely reasonable to be afraid of these things. Almost all of them stem from movies, so yeah, I'm probably just gullible and crazy. Take a look.

People hiding in the backseat. Ever since Urban Legends I've been afraid of people climbing in the backseat of my car. I always lock my door, even when paying for gas at the pump, but I'm still freaked out. I'm also afraid that someone is going to come up to me as soon as I get in, so I always lock the door instantly, instead of waiting to go 10 MPH for the automatic lock.

Getting stuck in an elevator. Most people are afraid of elevators dropping. I don't really worry about that, but I get anxious when the doors take an extra few seconds to open. I'm not claustrophobic, but I don't ever want to be stuck in an elevator. I refuse to go in one if I have to pee, for fear that I'll be in there for hours and I'll have to go in my pants. Ha!

Driving behind log trucks. I don't know that I've ever been truly comfortable driving behind big machines, but I blame this one on Final Destination 2. I give myself tons of room behind a log truck and pass it as soon as I can, otherwise the thought of a giant tree trunk rolling off and going through my windshield repeats in my mind. Plus, it really happens all the time!

Someone following me. In high school, my family lived on a pretty public two lane street. I would come home for my super late curfew at 10:00 pm (11:30 on weekends) and park on a side street, then run around a bush and through the yard to the front door. I was always terrified that someone walking by would follow me and, I don't know, strangle me? Stab me? I literally had a panicky feeling and ran with my key out and ready to shove into the lock every night.

Drive-by shooting. On that note, because so many people drove by our house, I was also scared I'd get shot in the back if I didn't unlock and open the door fast enough. Which of course made my hands tremble and the whole process took longer than necessary. Drive-bys weren't a thing in my town and I wasn't friends with anyone shady. Who knows why I was paranoid.

Ladybugs and moths. It's not like I love them, but I'm not too worried about spiders, rodents, or snakes. Flying insects are another story. I worked with kids throughout my college years and they were constantly catching things to show me. I'd scream and run when a ladybug popped out of their tiny, proud hands. Moths also freak me out because they swarm around lights and you have to walk through them if you're hanging outside. Just thinking of their wings near my ear makes me shudder.

Sinkholes. These are in the news more and more lately and I'm equally fascinated and creeped out. The ground just opens up and buildings, cars, and people are swallowed whole. It's insane! Remember the one in Florida that opened up in a man's bedroom? It opened up againApparently this is a common fear, though it doesn't have a name. I'm not one of those people that thinks I'm being pulled down or that I'll go into another dimension though.

What crazy stuff are you afraid of?
Have a happy and safe Halloween!

um yes to all of these.. especially the log truck (or anything on a truck, really) the only thing i wasn't afraid of was sinkholes and that's because i'd never heard of them until today, so... thanks for that. lol!

Driving behind log/other trucks with things that could fall through the windshield and kill me, YES.

YES to the elevator thing. I'm claustrophobic. AND YESTERDAY PEOPLE WERE STUCK IN MY BUILDING. I about freaking died.

Your back seat fear is not irrational - I have the same one and ALWAYS lock my doors if I walk away from my car AND check the backseat before getting in alone.

LOG TRUCKS FREAK ME OUT! Again, not irrational you're totally on point!

Have you ever had your home over run by lady bugs? NOT fun. My college dorm got over run and this past year they over ran our house. They get in around this time every year, if you have openings in your home, and they hibernate... when they wake up in the spring they can't figure out how to get out of your house... ANNOYING. I've heard that mums deter them... so I'm going to lowes this weekend to buy a ton!!!

Sinkholes worry me too!!! We had a few where i used to live, and they are random, like earthquakes and tornadoes.

My biggest irrational fear... Aliens. I blame Fire In The Sky that movie ruined me... if I ever see an alien I will probably crap my pants and faint and hope they don't abduct me!

I am so glad I'm not the only one with an irrational fear of drive by shootings. The fear is real!

I relate to almost all of these. Not so much moths and ladybugs but snakes and most things that fly or creep. Also horses. TERRIFIED of horses.

Log trucks, those trucks that transport cars...anything that looks like it has something that can fly off and crash through my windshield freaks me out.

Okay, the person in the backseat one is legit because that happened to my best friend when we were younger. Right in front of my house. It was FREAKY!

I am the same way about someone climbing in the backseat and elevators. And I am claustrophobic!

I despise moths, but I think ladybugs are sweet. I'm alright with elevators but get me the hell away from a log truck! Not only does someone hiding in the backseat scare me, but I used to be scared of someone hiding under my car and grabbing my feet. I'm a weirdo.

I worry about people sneaking into the backseat of my car too! Oh, and people breaking into my house...because it's almost happened a few times (drunk people who though they were trying to get into their own home).

I honestly don't think that most of these are that irrational. (Though maybe that's because I also fear most of these things!) I don't know ... I feel like the world has gotten so crazy that it's not completely out there to be afraid that someone would shoot you in a drive-by or that someone would try to carjack you. (Sorry, not trying to scare you further!)

My fears (whether irrational or not) include:

- Most of what you've listed here
- Bugs of any kind (I don't discriminate here!)
- Clowns (You just never know who is beneath that makeup!)
- Chainsaws (I say this like I'm around them a lot ... I'm not. I think the only times I've ever seen one in real life were at haunted houses/hayrides/etc. That was enough.)
- Home invasions (Movies about this topic scare me more than anything else.)
