Safeco Field

Happy Opening Day! Well, technically baseball started last night with the Cardinals/Cubs game, but whatever. In a few hours I'll be heading to the Mariners home opener with my dad and brothers. We've been going to the first game every year since 2003. I missed it 2012 because I was sick, but otherwise, I've been there! It's my favorite game of the season!

If you're ever in Seattle, Safeco Field is a must. The retro-modern ballpark opened in 1999 and was built right into the city so you get views of the skyline and the Puget Sound. With a railroad beside it, you hear trains pass during the game. One of it's signature features is the retractable roof. It's designed to cover, but not enclose the ballpark, so it's still an open-air stadium on rainy days. Contrary to popular belief about the weather here, the roof is only closed for about twenty games a year.

Some of the best stadium food in the league is found at Safeco. You can get sushi, Mexican, teriyaki, garlic fries, crepes, Thai, seafood, wood fired pizza, and barbecue. Some of these eateries can be found in The Pen, which is like a beer garden. It's located next to the bullpen, with wide views of the field, a fire pit, cocktail lounge, and party atmosphere. It holds about 3,000 fans and opens a few hours before each game for happy hour.

You can also walk through the Mariners Hall of Fame and Baseball Museum of the Pacific Northwest at the stadium. Don't forget to check out the artwork throughout, like The Tempest, a 1,000-bat chandelier, and Dave Niehaus statue.

Safeco also has the biggest HD scoreboard/video screen in MLB history, and the fifth largest in the world. They've also recently installed LED lights (the first in any stadium, which will cut the electricity usage by 60%) and free WiFi!

I'm so excited about this season. The Mariners are looking good and my brother picked up a ticket package so I should be at The Safe a lot this spring and summer. And fall, because they'll totally be in the postseason.

Play ball!

That is so fun that you go every year! I went last year and despite the freezing temps it was a blast. I can't wait to come to Seattle some day to see the Sox play!

Oh I love opening day! What a fun tradition for you guys.

I love your stadium, btw. It's a to-visit on my list. I sure wish we had a retractable roof in St. Louis.

We have tickets to the home opener next week, but I did enjoy seeing a little STL beating up on Chi-town last night, both in hockey and baseball.

PS- what's with your stadium food?! Looks ... good? Ours is not like that. Hashtag Midwestern cuisine. :)

I loved reading this. Safeco is one of the ballparks I haven't been to yet. Someday.

I used to be into baseball when I was younger. Now, I mostly don't care. We do have an extremely nice AAA stadium here. The Memphis Redbirds are the AAA team for the St. Louis Cardinals. We usually go to one or two games a year. I'd rather watch basketball. Or football. Or tv. Ha!

I love opening day! It really IS the best game of the season! I'm going tomorrow night to our Home Opener against the Royals. I'm a little nervous about it, given what happened the last time we faced the Royals...

I saw Safeco Field from the top of the Smith Building a few years ago when I was in Seattle. I would LOVE to see a game there.
