Happy Rex Manning Day!

Rex Manning Day is especially awesome this year because Empire Records turns 20 years old in October. Man, I'm old. How about some fun facts about my favorite movie?

It was written by Carol Heikkinen, a former employee of a Tower Records store in Phoenix. The store closed in 2005, ten years after the movie came out. She also wrote Center Stage.

Roger Ebert called the film a lost cause, but predicted that some of the actors might have a future in other, better films. It's true, check out what the cast has been up to since then.

The movie did terribly at the box office and received generally negative reviews. It only has a 24% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but an 84% audience score, so, there!

Johnny Whitworth (AJ) and Ethan Embry (Mark) are still BFFs and hang out regularly.

Since Robin Tunney (Deb) actually shaved her head in this scene, she had to wear a wig in her next movie, The Craft. We all know how good that looked.

The daughter of Max Caufield (Rex) had a cameo as the ballerina in headphones Mark dances with.

Coyote Shivers (Berko) was the stepfather of Liv Tyler (Corey) at the time of shooting. He and her mother, Bebe Buell, divorced in 1999, after a seven year marriage.

Toby Maguire played a character named Andre, but asked the director to be released from the film and his scenes were cut.

Two other characters were also cut, Dante and Lilly. Lilly was played by Dianne Miranda and can still be scene in the background in a few scenes.

Forty minutes of film was removed in editing and the timeline of the story was changed from two days to one, which is why the movie is technically a huge mess.

Rory Cochrane (Lucas) also starred in Dazed and Confused, which is referenced with a "Have A Nice Daze" sign near the cash register.

Some of the cast reunited two summers ago at an outdoor screening of the movie in LA.

The movie was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina and the original building is still there. I saw it in person on my trip in February!

I need to buy this movie. I've only seen it a few times, but loved it.

There's nothing better than a movie that the critics hate and fans love. This is how all of Adam Sandler's movies are. I caught Billy Madison the other day. It never gets old.
