Musicals Into Movies

Remember this post where I talked about the new Broadway musicals being adapted from movies? Well, Hollywood is doing the same thing. There are four musical-movies coming out in 2014.

Jersey Boys came to theaters on Friday. It tells the history of the Four Seasons: the tough times, personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic of a generation. It stars Christopher Walken, John Lloyd Young, James Madio, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Vincent Piazza, and Freya Tingley and is directed by Clint Eastwood. I saw this musical with my mom and sister so we're going to try to see the movie together this weekend.

When the trailer for Annie came out, a lot of people were pissed and others were extremely excited. I think it looks...interesting. I'll most likely see it (even though Cameron Diaz is overacting like crazy) just because I'm such a nerd for musicals. The cast includes Diaz, Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, and Quvenzhan√© Wallis. It was produced by Will Smith and Jay Z and written by Emma Thompson. Say what?! How did Emma Thompson get thrown into this mix? What do you think about this adaptation?

Into The Woods will be released on Christmas day. Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, James Corden, Lucy Punch, Christina Baranski, and Tammy Blanchard make up part of the huge cast. The story follows a baker and his wife who learn they've been cursed childless by a witch. In order to break the spell, they must embark into the woods to find specific objects. The film intertwines the original story of the baker and his wife, their interaction with the witch, and their interaction with other characters from stories like Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella.

The Last 5 Years doesn't have a release date yet, but will be out sometime in 2014. Anna Kendrick plays a struggling actress. Jeremy Jordan plays her novelist lover. The story explores their five-year relationship. In the musical, her stories are told in reverse chronological order and his start from the beginning, so they only interact on stage for one scene in the middle. All I've heard about the movie is that all of the songs will be sung with the other character present in each scene. Interesting.

There are even more movie-musicals in development. None of this is fact though, just speculation and rumor.

Spring Awakening McG is attached as director and production will hopefully begin sometime this year.
In The Heights It has a producer who is working to find a studio
Wicked There have been talks since 2010. Composer Stephen Schwartz said the movie has started gearing up.
Miss Saigon Discussions began in 2009. They were waiting to see if Les Miserables was successful. No other word.
The Book of Mormon Matt Stone and Trey Parker recently launched a production studio. Hmmm...
Pippin The Weinstein Company has named James Ponsoldt as writer and Craig Zadan and Neil Meron as producers.
Guys and Dolls 20th Century Fox bought the rights and are looking at Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to star.
American Idiot Rolin Jones wrote the script, just waiting for the studio to move it forward.
Damn Yankees Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey have been attached for a decade. Still no news.
My Fair Lady It's rumored that Emma Thompson will write and Carey Mulligan will star as Eliza Doolittle.
South Pacific Bob Balaban will produce and Michelle Williams was offered a part. No official word yet.

Are you excited for any of these movies?

I haven't seen Jersey Boys yet, but I plan to. Also looking forward to Into the Woods, even with the recently announced changes.

Also, would they just hurry up and make the Wicked movie already? I mean, really.

I'll definitely see Into The Woods. I'm not a die hard musical fan. Some I like. Some I don't.

Sadly I haven't seen Jersey Boys on stage, but I'm skeptical about the movie. What's Clint Eastwood doing directing a musical?

I'll definitely be seeing Jersey Boys, but I'm not sure about the Annie remake. I might see it for the sake of supporting a project of Will Smith's. :)

Into the Woods- yes. Book of Mormon- PLEASE. It was so so funny.

I can't wait to see Jersey Boys - loved the musical. Did you see the movie yet? Not so impressed w/ the version of Annie. Not sure if I will see it. Into the Woods sounds good. I've never seen that musical!
