Summer Camp

I've always sort of been obsessed with summer camp. Probably because I've never been. There's no way my parents had enough money to send us off every summer and also, it's just not that big of a deal around here. I didn't even have any friends that went away to camp, besides spending a week or so at their church's lake property. Is sleep-away camp just an East coast thing? Jacob and I have talked about it and definitely want to send our boys, even if it's out of state. And then we'll go on our own vacations. Score! The funny thing is, I've never really been into outdoor activities or sports (besides fast-pitch in 9th grade) and I'm not exactly creative, so I don't think I would have done well in a remote location all summer long. I just wanted to make lifelong girl friends who shared a special summer camp bond and have first kisses with cute boys in braces. Or maybe not. It kind of sounds awful.

As a kid of the '90s, one of my favorite shows was Salute Your Shorts, about kids at Camp Anawanna (filmed at Griffith Park Boys Camp in LA) and their weirdo counselor, Ug. I still have the theme song memorized. "Think Anawanna wanna, Speak Anawanna wanna, Live Anawanna wanna, Ug!" It only lasted two season, but my sister, brother and I watched the reruns for years.

In 1998, Disney aired it's first reality show, Bug Juice, about twenty kids and their experiences at summer camp. As a freshman in college, I was way too old to watch this show, but the kids I babysat watched it constantly and I always thought it was a pretty cute. I think I still know part of that theme song too. "Bug Juice, real kids, making friends, having fun..."

And now there's the NBC dramedy Camp. Rachel Griffith's character, Mac, runs Little Otter Family Camp. Parents unwind while their kids are off participating in outdoor activities, the camp counselors party and deal with flings, and Mac survives as recently divorced mom of a teenage boy. Yes, it's cheesy, but it's a cute, light, perfect for summer show and I'm hooked. What I don't really understand is why it's filmed in Australia, with an almost entire Australian cast, though it's meant to look like it takes place in the U.S. Most of the teen actors can't pull off an American accent and that always takes me out of the story. Regardless, it's a fun show. There are only three episodes left (one airing tonight) and there's no word on renewal yet. I hate that about summer shows. I try not to get too invested because they almost never stick around. I hope this one does even if it just comes back next summer for another short season.

So tell me, did you go to summer camp?
Did I totally miss out?

I never went and don't know anyone here who did. I always wanted to though. I guess it was the way they made it look on tv. I probably would have been calling my mom to come and get me after the first night.

I never went, nor did most of my friends in school. My college roommates all went and loved it. They went to a jewish summer camp and it was like a right of passage for them.

My boss's grandkids all go to summer camp, but my siblings and I never did. We couldn't afford that. I haven't seen Camp but I heard it was funny!

I never went to sleep away camp like the have in the movies or in these TV shows. I watched Salute your Shorts and loved it! But that's as close as I wanted to get. We had one or two camping trips as a Girl Scout and that was enough 'outdoors-ness' for me!

I always wanted to go to summer camp too. It just wasn't something we did either. I have not watched any of these shows you are talking about. I did see a preview of Camp abt someone maybe being pregnant? It caught my eye but I forgot to watch.

I think sleepaway camp is mostly an east coast thing, but I went to church camp most years and that was always a lot of fun.

How did I never hear about this NBC show? I completely missed it. Weird.
