Summer Is For Bad TV

I am watching some CRAP on TV lately. I don't know why I gravitate towards this stuff every warm, sunny season. It's not like there's a ton of quality programming to choose from though. Network execs must think we use the summertime to give our brains a break. I totally do, so they must know what they're talking about.  Here's what I've been watching.

Celebrity Wife Swap isn't actually filled with celebrities, just D-list actors and TV personalities, but still, I'll take it. I love fish out of water stuff and I seriously almost or do cry at the end of every episode. Celebs are people too! Drunk History is a hilarious Funny Or Die web series that I watched online years ago. It's not as funny as I remember it, but still good. It's awesome to see some of my favorite funny people reenact historical situations. So far Adam Scott as John Wilkes Booth is my favorite. He was INTO it. I wasn't going to watch the train wreck that is Princesses: Long Island, but I caught a marathon and now I'm obsessed. Damn you, Bravo! My favorite JAPs are Chanel, Joey and Amanda. But seriously Amanda's boyfriend is sooooo gay. How does she not see that? I can't stand Erica. She's a methy spaz. I don't understand why she can't sit still or why they all say she's "the hot one". Casey and Ashlee are bit ridiculous too, but not as hard to watch as Amanda. Ugh, why do care so much? Please tell me someone else is watching.

I'm such a sucker for a made for TV movie, no matter what the subject, and caught my fair share of Lifetime Movies. Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret was so terrible, but so good. I didn't watch the trial up until the very end so it was fun to go back and see the safe for TV version of her story. Anna Nicole wasn't terrible either. Agnes Bruckner played a good Anna Nicole, especially in the bad scenes, though she wasn't as pretty. The ghost or premonition scenes (what were those?) were pretty stupid, but some scenes were word for word the ones we saw on E! so many years ago. I just kept thinking about poor Daniel! Ring of Fire was a breezy biopic about June Carter Cash. I don't know anything about June other than what Reese Witherspoon portrayed. Jewel seemed to have a sillier take on her personality, but sounded great. She was totally unrecognizable with dark hair, blue eyes and straight teeth. That helped me put Jewel out of my mind and focus on June. On the other hand, Matt Ross as Johnny Cash creeped me out because I couldn't stop thinking about Albie Grant from Big Love.

Now on to network TV. The Goodwin Games was only seven episodes, but so cute and sweet. I really hope it gets renewed! I love the entire cast and I thought the plot was fun and different. The show felt like a cross between Gilmore Girls (small town weirdoes) and How I Met Your Mother (flashback scenes). If you can find it online, I recommend it! I wasn't going to watch Mistresses, but when my TiVo hit 0% (that's unheard of for me!), I had to find something to watch On Demand and I actually really like it! Yes, some of the women cheat and some are cheated on. So the show explores both sides of the story. I can't wait to see what scandals come up next! Camp just started last week, but so far I like it. I love a good summer camp show or movie, maybe because I've never been to one? The cast is pretty great and it shows kid, teen and adult story lines.

Netflix is killing it with their original programming. Jacob and I watched Arrested Development over ten days. I loved it! Not as much as the previous seasons, but it was still so awesome with tons of inside jokes, guest stars, and a lot of resolution for the fans. Except that they left the ending wide open. Hmmm... They are in talks to create a season five, so I hope it works out. Those Bluths are the best family on TV and it's a show that Jacob and I quote daily. I finally watched House of Cards in a binge watching session over four days. This show is so good! The writing and cast is awesome, but I especially love Robin Wright. I can't wait for season two! I'm four episodes in to Orange Is The New Black and I already love it and bet I'll finish it by the end of the week. Everyone in the cast is amazing and though it's a slow moving show, it really grabbed my attention. I love that they share histories of other characters. Awesome show!

Finally, some shows I can be proud of watching. HBO is awesome for summer TV. I'm about halfway through the first season of the documentary series Vice and I love it! It makes me sad, grateful and fired up all at the same time. It opens your eyes up to things you may never have known, or chose to ignore, going on across the country and throughout the world. Family Tree is a cute, quirky and funny show crated by Christoper Guest, starring cute, quirky and funny Chris O'Dowd as a guy searching for answers and filling in his family tree. There are a ton of hilarious guest stars and actors, my favorite being Nina Conti as his ventriloquist sister with her monkey puppet who speaks his mind. Seriously, watch it. The Newsroom just started it's second season. I haven't watched the premier yet, but I already know I'll love it. The first season was awesome and this one is already getting better reviews. I'm a huge fan of Aaron Sorkin and the entire cast.

Whew! There's no way I'd be able to watch that much TV if it wasn't for my TWO surgeries.
I hope I can keep up the rest of the summer! What have you been watching?

Orange is the new Black is my new obsession. We watched it in two days. It is slow moving a bit but you want it to be, it makes the awesomeness last. I hope they make a season 2 and beyond! Ugh, SO good!

I agreed with you about Arrested, I loved it but it wasn't as epic as past seasons BUT I think the point was it was for the fans, the inside jokes, the bits and pieces that were answered. I think they did a great job of tying it all up in a bow AND also giving us hope for a new season again.

I hate that I don't have HBO... those last shows sound great!

I really hope The Goodwin Games gets renewed. I love love love it!

Orange is the new Black, House of Cards and The Newsroom are on my list. I really loved how we got to see each AD episode from a different character's perspective.

I've been holding off on watching Mistresses because I heard they may not renew it.

I started watching Whodunnit. It's on ABC, but I caught up on Hulu. It's reality show based off the game Clue. It's dumb and I love it. And, of course, my new obsession is Friday Night Lights. So good!

I need to get into Family Tree and check out the other HBO shows too.

The Lifetime Jodi Arias movie was bad and awesome. I couldn't watch Ring of Fire because I couldn't reconcile Albie with Johnny Cash.

I want to see Orange is the New Black too.

I just started watching The Goodwin Games on Hulu and I love it! It's pretty darn perfect! Also, I'm loving Camp as well. I love that three of the teen characters are all Aussie actors from Dance Academy, which is also one of my favorite shows! If you haven't watched it, it's on Netflix!

I got sucked into Princesses as well. As with most reality shows they make me happy about my life...as in, "it could be worse...I could be living with my parents" sorta way ;)

You really need to check out some of the great USA Network shows - they have summer seasons and are all really good! Suits and Covert Affairs are my two favorites!
