Music Monday - Little Boxes

I know I'm six months late with this post, but I finally finished the last season of Weeds. It used to be a show that I watched the day after it aired, but after season four, I just wasn't as into it. In the end they tried to get the characters to come full circle and it felt a bit rushed, but it was still a better season than the previous two. I also didn't hate the season finale like most did. One of the things that stood out about this show was the music. Little Boxes is a 1962 song by Malvina Reynolds and was the theme song for the first season.

During the second, third and eighth seasons, that same song was covered by some pretty amazing musicians including Elvis Costello, Regina Spektor, Randy Newman, Donovan, Billy Bob Thornton, Joan Baez, The Decemberists, Linkin Park, The Shins, Dierks Bentley and even cast member Kevin Nealon accompanied by Steve Martin on banjo. Here are some of my favorites.

Death Cab For Cutie

Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice

Michael Franti

Ben Folds

But my favorite version has to be from Hunter Parrish. First of all, how did he go from this dorky kid...

...to this?

He's hot! I developed quite the crush on Silas Botwin throughout the seasons. And it felt kinda creepy. I knew he could sing because he replaced Jonathan Groff in Spring Awakening on Broadway, but I didn't know how much I would love his voice. Anyway, here's his cover of Little Boxes

He sounds so good! I'm crushing even harder now. Another song from Weeds that I'm absolutely in love with came from the last scene of the last episode.

Rilo Kiley - With Arms Outstretched
It's sixteen miles to the promised land and I promise you I'm doing the best I can
Don't fool yourself in thinking you're more than a man cause you'll probably end up dead
I visit these mountains with frequency and I stand here with my arms up
Now some days last longer than others, but this day by the lake went too fast
And if you want me you better speak up, I won't wait so you'd better move fast
Don't fool yourself in thinking you're more than you are with your arms outstretched to me

Goodbye, Weeds. You were a super weird show.
Any other fans out there or did you all drop off after season three?

This is one show I've never watched, but always felt like I should. I might have to give it a try now that i'm a Netflix addict.

We literally have a list of shows we want to watch.... it's horrible.

I loved season one, but never got around to watching anymore. I did the same with Six Feet Under.

I'm still catching up on the final season. I always enjoyed the different artists doing "Little Boxes," too. Another song my husband ended up downloading was "Trunk Fulla Amps" which was in season 7. LOL

Wait? It's no more? I never even saw one ep lol. I guess I need to Netflix it.

I watched the first two seasons but haven't seen anything beyond that. Somehow, I didn't realize they used so many covers of this song, and I definitely didn't know that Silas Botwin was responsible for one of them. Amazing! God definitely gave to him with both hands, so to speak. ;)

I loved this show! I'm just one season behind, I don't remember what season it was when I started to get bored, but then it got better and now I have to finish to end it. And I always got the theme song stuck in my head.

I haven't watched the last season yet! That was during my non-cable time!
