Vacation Recap: Salt Lake City

We had so much fun exploring Salt Lake City even though it was less than 10 degrees! This was the first vacation we took without an itinerary, which is so unlike me! I just didn't have time to research things to do or places to see through the holidays. Jacob visited when he was 12 years old and said there wasn't a whole lot to do so we could just play it by ear and relax while we explored. No time table, no schedules, no real plans. I embraced his hippie attitude the best I could and think we did alright.

The first thing we did was visit Temple Square. Jacob's family is Mormon. I love to learn about all religions, and although Jacob distanced himself from the Church when he was 17 years old, he was happy to fill me in on history and traditions. We wandered around the Temple grounds until we couldn't handle the cold anymore. It was so pretty, especially covered in white.

Then we saw an organ recital at the Tabernacle. So, so, so impressive! It's made of 11,623 pipes, with 206 sets of voices, and five keyboards. Hearing Bach in that amazing room on a huge creepy organ was just awesome.

After spending some time in the hotel warming up, we drove through the city. I irritated Jacob by trying to take pictures of houses with icicles. I've never really seen icicles before. We get a few dripping off our car or mailbox once or twice a winter, but to have them on your house all the time? So cool. I was taking a picture  when I heard a little girl ask, "Mom, why is that lady taking a picture of nothing?" as they passed us. Haha! Yeah, I'm a dork. But we saw some up to 4 feet long!

How pretty is the Salt Lake City and County Building?

For dinner we wandered through downtown to The Melting Pot. Yeah, we go there all the time here at home, but we always enjoy eating it. We get to take our time, relax, eat good food, and enjoy each other.

Nerds.

The next morning we slept in and relaxed then I had the brilliant idea to see to the Great Salt Lake. Jacob said it was really boring and ugly so I wouldn't miss much if we didn't go, but I insisted. We drove about 40 minutes out of the city in fog and smog with almost no one else on the highway. It felt very post-apocalyptic. Or like we were going to be stopped at a checkpoint and then get eaten by zombies. It was so eerie out there! And yeah, the lake wasn't much to see.

Come back tomorrow to read all about the Salt Lake Olympic sites we saw!

I laughed at the pic of you two mugging together.

Yeah, I don't even see the lake. I hate when something is a bust!

Tell me more tell me more.

I love that you take so many pictures. I went to SLC when I was 16, and loved it. The Temple is just GORGEOUS, and the surrounding area is beautiful, too. Love the icicle picture! :)
