Are You A Friggatriskaidekaphobe?

It’s Friday the 13th! We had one in January and one in April. There is at least one Friday the 13th every year, but no single year has more than three, and the longest period that can occur without a Friday the 13th is fourteen months.

The Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute estimates that 17 to 21 million people in the U.S. have a diagnosable phobia of Friday the 13th. It’s called friggatriskaidekaphobia. That’s a lot of people!

Numerologists consider 12 a complete number: 12 months complete a year, 12 signs complete the zodiac and 12 inches complete a foot. 13 comes next, so it’s scary.

Most buildings don’t have a 13th floor. Some cities don't have a 13th street. Airports are missing gate 13 and airplanes often skip the 13th row. Some hotels and hospitals eliminate a room 13. In Florence, the house between 12 and 14 is actually addressed as 12 1/2.

Legend has it if 13 people sit down to dinner together, one will die within the year. In France, diners can hire a quatorzieme, or professional 14th guest.

Some estimates suggest that the US economy loses nearly $900 million on Friday the 13ths because many people avoid business deals or even skip work altogether. Henry Ford declined to do any business and Franklin Delano Roosevelt avoided travel on Friday the 13th.

Many Americans won’t drive on Friday the 13th, for fear of car accidents. But there is no evidence that Friday the 13th is more dangerous than other Friday of the year.

Australia’s biggest wildfire, Florida’s Hurricane Charley and Kansas’s Great Flood of 1951 all occurred on a Friday the 13th.

A group of affluent New Yorkers started a “13 Club” in 1881 to prove that Friday the 13th superstitions are stupid. Thirteen people met every Friday the 13th and dined in Room 13. During the gathering, guests walked under ladders and through piles of spilled salt. Hilarious!

There have been twelve Friday The 13th movies: Friday The 13th (1980), Friday The 13th Part Two (1981), Friday The 13th Part III (1982), Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter  (1984), Friday The 13th: A New Beginning (1985), Jason Lives: Friday The 13th Part VI (1986), Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988), Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989), Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993), Jason X (2001), Freddy vs. Jason (2003), Friday The 13th (2009).

So tell me, are you friggatriskaidekaphobic (afraid of Friday the 13th) or triskaidekaphobic (afraid of the number 13)?
Did this post totally freak you out?

(Did you notice 13 pictures of the number 13 on here. Creepy.)

Love this post!
Some interesting.. {and weird}.. facts! It doesn't bother me but I've noticed that so many people that I'be been trying to call {work related} are out of the office today. I didn't get that memo!

Wait - H20 was a Jason movie, does that count as the 13th Friday the 13th movie?

I'm not superstitions of the day...which is weird because I'm afraid of everything lol! I once had to stay on the 13th floor in Vegas and was so pissed that the bachelor party wouldn't switch our rooms haha. And walking under a ladder...WILL NOT DO IT!

Haha this is a great post! I really love it! And now know not to have a party of 13 on the 13th. Cold chills, for real.

My birthday is today, and I have had several Friday the 13th birthdays!

When I was a kid I was such a freak about it being on the 13th!

Great post! Why hire a professional 14th guest? If you know that many people, why not just invite 1 more? People are weird. Friday the 13th doesn't bother me.
